Krüger), zur Frühzeit der Bibliothek des Herzogs Otto I. von Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Harburg (Ralf Busch) und über die Bibliotheksreise eines jungen Altonaers nach Italien 1780-1782 (F. Andrae). Sehr lesenswert sind die Aufsätze, die sich mit der Hamburger Stadtbibliothek im 19. Jh. beschäftigen: mit dem Jahresbericht 1849 (D. Roth), über die vergeblichen Versuche, der Bibliothek das Pflichtexemplarrecht zukommen zu lassen (O.-E. Krawehl) und über die umstrittene Öffentlichkeitsarbeit anläßlich eines in Hamburg veranstalteten Journalistentags 1894 (H.-D. Loose). In diesen Kontext gehört auch der Beitrag von okay. Garber mit dem inhaltsschweren Titel ,Der Untergang der alten Hamburger Stadtbibliothek im Zweiten Weltkrieg'. Es handelt sich darum, den früheren Besitz aus dem Bereich der Barockliteratur und an Hamburgensien zu beschreiben und damit die einstige Bedeutung der Bibliothek herauszustellen. Für die Zeit des 18. Jh. sei die deutsche Literatur in ihr in ,einer Geschlossenheit versammelt' gewesen wie sonst nur in Berlin und Göttingen. Zur Bibliotheksgeschichte zählt auch die Studie von H. Voigt, die sich mit dem Rücktritt von Gustav Wahl von der Leitung der Deutschen Bücherei in Leipzig (1916) und seiner späteren Berufung nach Hamburg (1918) beschäftigt, auch mit den vergeblichen Bemühungen, O. Wahl 1920 noch einmal nach Sachsen an die Spitze der Dresdner Landesbibliothek zurückzuholen.
